ART COLLECTIVE: From the One to the Many

London Art Collective presents the 22nd London Design Festival exhibition “ART COLLECTIVE: From the One to the Many” at Saatchi Gallery, from 17th to 19th September 2024. Curated by Nelson Qin, the Chief Curator of London Art Collective, and Joe Richards, the Guest Curator of the exhibition. This exhibition, taking place during the London Design Festival, explores the relationship between art collectives and individuals by showcasing the impact of collaborative work on society.

“ART COLLECTIVE: From the One to the Many” presented around ninety works by fifty artists from sixteen countries. The title of the exhibition “ART COLLECTIVE: From the One to the Many” was inspired by a book by Grant H. Kester, which introduces a new form of artistic practice related to collaboration. The exhibition expands on this idea, placing it within a broader and more diverse context. Likewise, the collaborative art game “Cadavre Exquis” (Exquisite Corpse) brings a more alternative interpretation to the exhibition. It as a metaphor for the exhibition, reflects the diverse creation motivations and collectives featured in the exhibition, forming a cohesive whole. Moving between the four exhibition halls, the audience will encounter different animated bestiaries in artworks and the exhibition’s visual identities, which both visually and conceptually symbolise the intersection of individual creativity and collective imagination. By attributing unique features to these animals, they represent a wide range of artistic disciplines, genres, races, and national identities.

How do these individuals and collectives engage with collaborative practices and share their ideas within a dynamic community? The exhibition precisely portrays scenes that encourage the development of an art ecosystem focused on sharing creativity and resources. Within the four exhibition halls of the Saatchi Gallery, the main halls display works centred on themes of animated bestiaries, natural ecology, and sets of sculptures exploring contradiction and aesthetic intrigue. An adjacent hall presents a harmonious vision of nature and community, while another focuses on sculptures and interactive installation, reflecting the ethos of collective creation by emphasising participation and shared experience. The final hall continues the diverse approach to creation, featuring cutting-edge video and digital art, offering a variety of pathways for collective artistic expression.

The creation of an art collective goes beyond the final visual outcome; it is rooted in the transformative power of collaboration and the impact generated through the shared value. This exhibition seeks to inspire the formation of new collectives by bringing together artists from diverse disciplines and cultural backgrounds. By doing so, “ART COLLECTIVE: From the One to the Many” reinforces London ArtCollective’s vision of fostering inclusivity and bridging the gap between established artists and those still defining their artistic identities. It provides a platform for dialogue, innovation, and equitable representation, offering a fresh perspective on the potential of collective creation to shape the future of contemporary art.

Contemporary Art Forum

As part of the exhibition ART COLLECTIVE: From the One to Many at the Saatchi Gallery, this forum will explore the concept of freedom as it manifests across various facets of the art world. The exhibition is inspired by the Surrealist practice ofExquisite Corpse, a collaborative method of creation that foregrounds the collective unconscious and the shared autonomy of the mind.
